A lot of people ask us "what exactly is an alpaca?"
An alpaca is an animal from the "camelid family" that look similar to a llama and are native to South America, as are llamas, and more specifically mostly are from Peru and The Andes (see below). Their fiber is silky soft, much more than a llama, and are extremely warm when worn as clothes.
Peru, but more specifiaclly; The Andes
Another note of interest is that Alpaca fur is hypoallergenic, meaning that people who are allergic to animal hair can finally feel warm in our clothing as alpaca fur won't cause allergic reactions or irritation!
Alpacas are social herd animals that live in family groups consisting of a territorial alpha male, females and their young. They are gentle, elegant, inquisitive, intelligent and observant. As they are a prey animal, they are cautious and nervous if they feel threatened. They like having their own space and may not like an unfamiliar alpaca or human getting close, especially from behind.
This is important to us at Woodside Alpacas Farm, as we give the alpacas space in the fields so they are relaxed and happy animals.
